A theater arts major in college, Windy O’Connor took her first painting class as a young mother and immediately became fascinated with both the act of painting and experimenting with different materials. After starting out with small shows in people’s homes, she now sells her abstract, mixed-media works in galleries throughout the South.

Rebecca Rothfus Harrell is a visual artist living and working in Austin, TX. She earned a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Tufts University/SMFA. Her work has been exhibited in a variety of locations including: Chicago, IL; Columbus, OH; Dallas, TX; Marfa, TX; Miami, FL; Philadelphia, PA; San Jose, CA; and Austin, TX. In 2011 she completed a residency at Sparkbox (Ontario, Canada) and in 2015 at The Banff Center (Alberta, Canada). In March of 2017 she will attend a residency at the Vermont Studio Center followed by a solo show at Gallery 81453 in Telluride, CO in June.

“I happened to be watching a film wherein the central character becomes addicted to support groups. One of these fictional groups catered to amputees with phantom pains. I took the idea and ran with it, using a style I enjoy to create a one-of-a-kind piece.”

Caper West is a self-taught, freelance artist who has established a distinctive voice with his art that he credits to his bold, almost reckless technique, his wildly broad influences, and his often subversive, humorous content. Mostly, though, Caper simply finds his work rewarding and hopes at least a few other people out there enjoy his creations as much as he does.
“I look at nature, but I also look at modern, urban landscapes and pull ideas and images from that. The fan, to me, resembles shapes you see occurring in nature. My aerofoil design is based on the idea of a more organic flower symbolism.”

As someone who treats walls as canvases, he says the concept of ceiling fans as artwork makes perfect sense. “It’s an unbelievable idea to extend art to the ceiling. It’s a huge space that people rarely consider as a palette."

"Visual Vestige is inspired by automotive paint scallops and comic book thought bubbles, which I reference in a lot of my work. I chose the bright blue and yellow colour as an homage to the original Blue Angels Corsair aircraft. The design provides a sense of speed and creates a tracer effect as the fan spins."

Luke Achterberg is a sculptor who draws inspiration from custom cars, hot-rods and the graffiti and street art that were touchstones of his childhood. His body of work – comprised of freestanding and wall-mounted painted steel sculptures and ceramic works – highlights the skills he honed while studying both fine arts and technical welding before earning his MFA.

"The form of the fan, itself, is a beautiful shape. We wanted to approach it in a way that accentuated the structure and worked with the airfoil to create a coherent whole. We started by thinking about the aerofoil itself. That led us to the evolution of flying machines, from the early Leonardo da Vinci drawings to hot air balloons to modern-day inventions."

"I have heavy ideas from time to time, but I typically keep my creative process pretty simple and spur-of-the-moment. In the case of Whale Bones, I thought the aerofoil had a similar profile to a whale. I stenciled the skeleton -- as though you're looking through the whale -- and painted the nautical background."

"As a kid, I used to go to car shows with my uncle, and those automotive design elements show up in a lot of the stuff I do. This design shows that influence – I think of it as black-tie meets tricked-out hot rod. The result is something you could see at one of those car shows, or on the bottom of a skateboard or snowboard. It embodies the style that I call “Super Sleek” – candy for the eye."
